The early bird catches the worm, in this case, the early bird at the party gets the drink! This was a bold parakeet that visited us and many others frequently and persistently while we were celebrating our recent honeymoon on the northwest coast of Mauritius.
In order to achieve success in anything you desire, you must incorporate it into your daily routine.. I recall a Sunday service at church more than ten years ago, during which Jason Clark, the pastor shared a similar message that has remained with me to this day. I have endeavoured to integrate this principle into my journey of learning to play the piano.
Improving your piano practice, or anything that you are pursuing to master, requires frequent playing or practice. Ok! Sometimes we have days where it is a challenge to achieve but if you are persistent with your quest, soon enough it becomes a habit. James Clear, the author of Number one New York Times bestseller, ‘Atomic Habits’, says that “on average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behaviour becomes automatic - 66 days to be exact.
When encouraging my students to practice, I recommend them to visit the piano a few minutes, a few times a day. For example, they wake up and get dressed, while they are waiting for their breakfast to cook, or for the kettle to boil, play a scale, slowly in each hand. When they get home from school or work, play another segment. It could be a bar of music, which you are finding tricky. Whatever it is, just start adding these moments into your day. Ask yourself each morning - Will I practice today? Currently I am reading “The diary of a ceo” by Steven Bartlett. A book I can highly recommend. In accordance to his book, there are 33 laws, to help you to succeed in business and life. Law 6 reveals asking yourself a question, is a sure way of changing your behaviours and helping you make new choices.
My question to myself and you reading. “Will you practice today?”. Improving your piano practice by the frequency is a sure way of reaching your goals.
